The flu is not only miserable for a child who has it and stressful for a family coping with its child's illness, it is a serious health threat as well. The information below might be helpful if flu makes an unwelcome visit to your house:

1.  It is a good idea for everyone to get a flu shot, but especially for people who have health problems like asthma.  Influenza usually peaks in February or March in Minnesota. Ask your doctor for more information.

2.    Influenza flu is different from stomach flu.  The influenza virus attacks the nose, throat and lungs.  With influenza, people usually get sick very fast with fevers, sore throat, headaches, body aches, extreme tiredness, dry cough and stuffy nose.  These symptoms can be severe and put you in bed for a number of days.  

3.     Influenza is mostly spread when people cough or sneeze. Everyone should be covering their noses and mouths when they cough or sneeze (in a tissue that gets discarded is best, or in a sleeve if no tissues are nearby).  Everyone should be washing their hands often with soap and water or a hand sanitizer. Teach the students not to share anything that goes into their mouths such as drinking cups, straws, pop cans, etc.  Teachers - it is also a good idea to be sanitizing surfaces like tables, desks, phones, door knobs, etc if you have sick students in your room.

4.    Although we encourage good attendance, students and adults who are sick should stay home to keep from spreading it to others.
