At Pillsbury Elementary, all students in the bilingual program learn to read and write in Spanish as well as English. In the first years of school, the majority of instruction takes place in Spanish. In kindergarten and first grade, for example, reading and math are entirely in Spanish. Pillsbury students thus learn to read in Spanish before learning to read in English.

The amount of instruciton in English increases as students grow older. In second grade, we introduce reading in English, though students still recieve substantial reading instruciton in Spanish.

In third grade, the majority of instruction takes place in English.  Spanish instruciton takes place during reading block within small groups.
